The Globe, Perth

The Globe Perth, located in the original historic Globe Hotel, is one of Perth’s oldest still-operating pubs.

The Globe has provided accommodation, dining and bar facilities since its construction in 1883.

The venue quickly became one of the most well-known establishments in Perth, catering to both local settlers and travellers. The Globe Hotel was a popular destination and part of a growing hospitality scene in a developing town.

The Heritage Council of WA tells us the hotel is an integral component of a precinct of buildings from the Federation and Inter-War periods.

“It is important to the historic streetscapes that remain on both sides of William Street and along Wellington Street,” it says. “[It] is a good example of a classically derived building with a simply composed front façade. [It] is associated with the expansion and the intensive building program in the Perth central business district that occurred during the gold rush period in the 1880s and 1890s, together with the opening of the Fremantle to Guildford railway in 1881.”

The building was constructed in 1883 for publican Michael McMahon.

The West Australian on 26 November 1892 wrote admiringly of the hotel and its licensee.

“Mr F. Gatwood who, with commendable enterprise during the few months he has been in occupation, completely transformed the old Globe Hotel in Wellington Street, opposite the railway station, making it one of the best in the city…”

It went on: “Amongst the most noticeable improvements effected to the hotel are a commodious and handsome bar, replete with all modern arrangements and appliances, a billiard room second to none in the city for its roominess and appearance, and a fine wide balcony, which might also be claimed for its width to be the finest in the city.”

The newspaper reported that at a dinner celebrating the re-opening of the hotel after its improvements, a toast was made to “the health of Mr and Mrs Gatwood” who were “the model of modern hotel keeping” and “great success” was predicted for the hotel. That was certainly an accurate prediction.

Throughout the 20th century, the Globe Hotel underwent several renovations and changes in ownership.

Today the modern Globe pays tribute to its origin in a popular drinking and dining space where classic charm meets modern design. Our modern Australian menu offers everything from bar bites to burgers with a stellar line up of local and international beers and seasonally updated wine and cocktail list.

Come in soon and say hello.
